Fredrik Tjærandsen’s Theatrical Designs Transform as Air is Released
Central Saint Martins’ graduate fashion show provides a look at the creative leaders of the future and one standout who has caught the attention of Vogue is Fredrik Tjærandsen and his viral balloon dresses. Tjærandsen sent models down the runway in theatrical outfits that formed giant bubbles around their bodies and heads. Simply by releasing an air pressure valve, the colorful outfits transformed by deflating, taking on new shapes as form-fitting skirts and dresses—some of which included exaggerated shoulder or arm pieces.
The designer’s balloon outfits included styles like the ORANGE BUBBLE and GREEN BUBBLE, which were made using rubber sourced from Sri Lankan suppliers who support local growers.
Tjærandsen’s eight-piece collection closed out Central Saint Martins’ 2019 Fashion Design Womenswear BA graduate show with a bang.
